The Best Light Bulb With No Mercury

light bulbMy apartment is full of compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use 20% of the energy a normal bulb uses, and they don’t heat up your house. They last 3 years running 8 hours a day, and they’re bright and beautiful. However, there is one setback. Break them by accident, and you’ll be dealing with a hazardous situation. Inside all CFLs is a tiny drop of mercury, an extremely poisonous liquid metal. Dispose of even one of these things improperly and your poison everyone’s drinking water.

Enter the 7 Watt LED light bulb, and not only are problems solved, but you save even more energy, and the light bulb lasts for 11 years, not just 3. That’s four times as long at one fourth the power consumption of a CFL. That’s a 16-fold improvement. That, and it is virtually indestructible. Oh, did I mention that there is no mercury in this thing? Well, there isn’t.

The 7 Watt LED Light Bulb gives off the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb (that’s 9x more efficient than a regular bulb) and during its 11 year life, it will cost you $22 to run. A regular bulb would cost $220 to run and will need to be replaced about 30 times in that time period. There’s really no contest.

Oh – it doesn’t even get hot at all. A CFL won’t heat up your room, but it will feel hot if you touch it. This just stays warm.
